A terrarium is a miniature garden grown inside a transparent container. It creates a self-sustaining ecosystem where plants can thrive with minimal maintenance. Closed terrariums develop their own water cycle, while open terrariums require occasional watering.

Most terrariums thrive in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can create a greenhouse effect inside the container, potentially cooking your plants. A north or east-facing window is often ideal for most terrarium setups.

Closed terrariums rarely need watering as they recycle moisture. If you notice no condensation for several weeks, add a small amount of water. Open terrariums typically need watering every 2-4 weeks, depending on humidity and plant types.

Small tropical plants that thrive in humidity are ideal. Ferns, mosses, fittonias, peperomias, and small ferns work well. Avoid plants that grow large quickly, need dry conditions, or require very specific care like succulents and cacti (unless in an open, dry terrarium).

Maintain proper ventilation by occasionally opening closed terrariums. Don't overwater, remove any dead plant material promptly, and ensure proper drainage layers. If mold appears, increase air circulation and consider adding springtails, which are beneficial microorganisms that consume mold.

A well-made closed terrarium can potentially last for decades with minimal intervention. The longest recorded terrarium was over 50 years old. Open terrariums typically require more regular maintenance but can also last indefinitely with proper care and occasional plant trimming or replacement.

Glass containers with openings large enough for your hand work best. For closed terrariums, use containers with lids or narrow openings. Mason jars, fish tanks, and glass cookie jars all make excellent terrarium containers. Look for clear glass to maximize light penetration.
